The HK G3 (Rifle 3) in caliber 7.62 NATO was introduced as the standard rifle in the German Bundeswehr in 1959 and is still a popular rifle among military units all over the world, precisely because of its historical significance. After almost 40 years of use of the G3 by the Bundeswehr, it was decided in 1997 to replace it with the new HK G36.
